Gaeta Castle
Gaeta Castle stands on a rocky promontory in the city of Gaeta on the shores of the Gulf of Gaeta 120 km south of Rome.
The date of construction of Gaeta Castle is unknown, but the construction is estimated around the 6th century during the Gothic Wars, or in the 7th century to protect Gaeta from the invasion of the Lombards.
Nowadays, Gaeta Castle is made of two different buildings: the Aragonese part and the Angevin part. The former is located on the top and was built by order of Emperor Charles V while the latter is on the lower part of the edifice, dates back to the period of the Angevin dynasty, and is currently an off-campus building of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio.
